A Cool idea and a warm gesture

With more than a month of triple-digit temps - breaking the 1980 record of 32 straight 100-degree days - it would appear we are melting. All kidding aside, it’s during these unbearably hot days that the most vulnerable – children, the elderly and the sick – are at a greater risk of suffering from a heat-related illness.

A few Houston-area residents are now cooling off, thanks to a warm gesture by a group of METRO staffers.

    Easing traffic congestion is our middle name.

On Aug. 22, we opened the US 290 eastbound diamond lane, just as thousands of kids headed back to class – and a time when we typically see a spike in the rush-hour commute.  The timing was impeccable.

    There’s definitely some appeal in not having to deal with rush-hour traffic. Early numbers show METRO’s new Park & Ride serving Missouri City is attracting new riders.

The service – an extension of route 170 – launched Aug. 22, and gives area residents another option to get to the Texas Medical Center, or downtown.

title_bar1 spacer A Decade in the Making, Installation of New Light Rail Brings Out Supporters on Southeast Line

    Cement mixers churned, cameras clicked, and hands clapped as concrete began to pour into formed sections where steel rail was already waiting.

The new light-rail guide-way runs parallel to the more familiar Union Pacific tracks and one of its locomotives blasted its horn as it pulled a long train of cars in sight of the ceremony where the cement was being spread.
